ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
Greece accepts a full invitation from Turkey to participate with aircraft in the anniversary activities of the Turkish Air Forces in June. Sources say, however, the neighboring country has not been invited for the Anatolian Eagle military drills scheduled for later that month
Greece will attend the 100th anniversary ceremony of the Turkish Air Force on June 4-5 by sending aircraft, a diplomatic source said Friday.
“Neighboring Greece will be one of the 58 countries to take part in the ceremony,” the source told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He clarified that this was not a military exercise but an activity to mark the 100th anniversary. Some 33 countries will be represented in the ceremony with the status as observers without sending any jets.
“We sent a full invitation to Greece, which accepted to join the ceremony with aircraft,” the diplomat said.
The Turkish Air Force was founded in 1911 and will host an international air show at the 2nd Main Jet Base Command in the Çiğli district of Aegean city of İzmir on June 4-5. The show that Greece is attending will be open to the public.
However, sources emphasized that the neighboring country was not invited to another exercise scheduled for June 13-24.
“Greece will not be present in the Anatolian Eagle exercise in June,” said the diplomat.
The Turkish Air Force also said in a written statement posted on its Website that news reports saying Greece and China were invited to the Anatolian Eagle drills were not true.
“Those countries [Greece and China] have been invited to take part in the European Air Chiefs Conference and Global Air Chiefs Conference in Istanbul on June 1-3 and the International Air Show on June 4-5,” said the Air Forces. “The two are not included in the list of countries invited for the Anatolian Eagle exercise that will be conducted in 2011,” it said.
The Turkish Air Force Command will host an international conference at which air chiefs from approximately 80 countries will discuss 21st-century air and space developments on June 2 in Istanbul. The European Air Chiefs Conference, which takes place every year in a different part of Europe, will be in Istanbul on June 1.
Papandreou to attend ambassadors' conference in Erzurum
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, meanwhile, will participate in the conference of Turkey's ambassadors abroad next month, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources have confirmed.
The weeklong meeting, which will be the third since such conferences began in 2008, will start in the capital Ankara between Jan. 3-6 and run through Jan. 9 in the eastern Anatolian province of Erzurum. Papandreou is expected to attend the Erzurum leg of the conference, sources said.
The conferences provide a platform for around 200 diplomats to discuss foreign policy matters and generate road maps. Last year's theme was democracy, security and stability and attended by high-level officials from abroad including German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
In the opening address at last year's conference, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu unveiled a manifesto for Turkish diplomacy and urged for hard and soft power to be used in harmony. In an adaptation of a famous quote from Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk regarding military tactics and defending frontlines, he said, "There is no diplomacy of a line, there is diplomacy of a surface. That surface is the globe."
