Ο σεισμός έγινε ιδιαίτερα αισθητός και στη γειτονική Γουατεμάλα. Μέχρι στιγμής δεν υπάρχουν πληροφορίες για θύματα ή για την έκταση των καταστροφών.
Το αμερικανικό κέντρο προειδοποίησης για τσουνάμι στον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό (PTWC) ανέφερε ότι υπάρχει πιθανότητα παλιρροϊκά κύματα να πλήξουν παράκτιες περιοχές σε απόσταση έως και 300 χιλιομέτρων από το επίκεντρο του σεισμού.
Στην πρωτεύουσα της Γουατεμάλας, ο σεισμός ταρακούνησε κτίρια και ανάγκασε ορισμένους κατοίκους να βγουν τρέχοντας στους δρόμους, σύμφωνα με μαρτυρία που μεταδίδει το πρακτορείο ειδήσεων Reuters.
